ICRP Posts Draft Report for Comment

The work of the ICRP Task Group on the Application of the Commission’s Recommendations to the Protection of Individuals Living in Long Term Contaminated Territories after a Nuclear Accident or a Radiation Emergency is nearing completion.

This draft, which is now posted on the ICRP Web Site for public consultation, is a companion document to the draft on emergency exposure situations. The present draft however discusses such issues as the transition from an emergency to a ‘post-accident rehabilitation’ phase, the strategies to achieve levels of exposure comparable to those in normal situations, and the direct involvement of exposed persons in their own protection. While the draft was developed with a view to long-term contamination after an accident or incident, many aspects may also be broadly applicable to other existing exposure situations.

ICRP would much appreciate comments on this draft report. Comments can be made on the ICRP Web Site Consultation Comments page. Comments should be made no later than Monday 13 October.

ICNIRP Announces 2008 International NIR Workshop

ICNIRP has announced its quadriennial International Non-Ionizing Radiation Workshop to be held from 14 to 17 October 2008 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Electromagnetic fields of all frequencies represent one of the most common and fastest growing environmental influences, about which anxiety and speculation are spreading. All populations are now exposed to varying degrees of electromagnetic fields, and the levels will continue to increase as technology advances. The social relevance of such non-ionizing radiation cannot be underestimated and the analysis and discussion of scientific findings are of the utmost importance.

Non-ionizing radiation protection is a broad field demanding knowledge of many scientific disciplines including epidemiology, medicine, biology and physics and engineering. Every four years, an international workshop is organized by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation (ICNIRP) to present an up-to-date overview of the advancement of science and protection in different areas of non-ionizing radiation.

The 6th International Non-Ionizing Radiation Workshop will be co-sponsored by the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology and the World Health Organization.

Further information on the scope of the workshop and the program are available at www.icnirp.org/NIR2008.htm. Any questions may be sent to ICNIRP at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

This draft, which is now posted on the ICRP Web Site for public consultation, discusses such issues as the setting and use of reference levels, optimisation with respect to protective measures, and the interface with the rehabilitation phase following an emergency. Another Task Group is currently developing a companion document concerning radiological protection during that phase; that document will soon be posted here for consultation.

ICRP would much appreciate your views on this draft report. To provide your comments, please go to the ICRP Consultation Comments page. In order for ICRP to be able to take your comments into account, the comments must be submitted no later than Friday 8 August.
